Lena has lived her whole life near the beach, walking for miles up and down the shore and breathing the salty air, swimming in the cold water, and watching the surfers rule the waves. The problem is, she's spent her whole life just watching.

As her 16th birthday approaches, Lena vows she will no longer watch from the sand she will learn to surf. But her father, a former surfer himself, refuses to allow her to take lessons. After a near drowning in his past, he can't bear to let Lena take up the risky sport.

Yet something lures Lena to the water - an ancient, powerful magic. One morning she catches sight of this magic a beautiful woman with a silvery tail. Nothing will keep Lena from seeking the mermaid, not even the dangerous waves at Magic Crescent Cove. And soon what she sees in the mermaids mirror will change her life.

The Mermaid’s Mirror (Audible Audio Edition) L K Madigan Katie Schorr Audible Studios Books

The Mermaid's Mirror is a beautiful story about a girl who has been living with the belief that her mother died when she was four and finds out that the circumstances were somewhat different than what she knew. It's apparent early on where the story is headed, but not about the choices that have to be made or the costs of those choices.

Lena is almost sixteen and has lately been finding herself waking up in the early mornings on the beach, barefoot in her pajamas. What's more she believes she's seeing a mermaid in the water. And she is taking surfing lessons on the sly, because her father will not let her despite her deep love of the ocean. She's a natural at it and in a risky move, she surfs Magick, a place where even the best surfers are wary of because of the reefs and holes. It is there that she sees the mermaid again and receives something from her that opens up the mystery surrounding her mother's death.

I stayed up until five am reading this book, it was that good. It had some romance, not much, but it was more about family and trust and Lena having to make tough choices. She hovers between two worlds and is only allowed to choose one for the rest of her life and Fate has been cruel in putting her true love in one and her family in another. Madigan gives a fascinating glimpse into what a merperson's world would look like and what their days would be filled with and I think she does an equally good job and portraying Lena as a typical teen.

The story flowed smoothly and nothing felt contrived or out of place. Madigan's writing is easy to read and moves along at a fast pace considering I read the book in a few hours in the middle of the night. I also just couldn't put it down. I had to know what Lena's choice was because there wasn't a win/win situation for her. The epilogue is a good way to end the book, though somewhat a given considering all that has happened. I only wish that maybe a merman's head would have popped up at Magicks while Lena was there, hoping there was someway to redeem that situation. Ms. Madigan also includes a little information in the back of the book stating that Magicks was based on a real place where a surfer died.

The Mermaid’s Mirror (Audible Audio Edition) L K Madigan Katie Schorr Audible Studios Books Reviews

This is a good book, with a good lay out and good characters, but the characters a shallow, the lay out is not very detailed, and it feels rushed in a way. As if the story should have been told over several books instead of just one.
At first I wasn't really sure if I was going to like this book or not. The start of the book was kind of slow and I found it hard to get into. Lena story is similar to the silver-age origin of Aquaman as her surfer dad had married a mermaid only in this case having a daughter instead of a son. The story really gotten interesting when she started getting in trouble with her dad and step mom when hearing the call of the sea and got the magical mermaid mirror before joining her real mermaid mom under the sea.
This book is a very amazing story i love how the story went, the cover is beautiful. I recommend this book for all the mermaid lovers out there and people who are getting into mermaid books. The only problem i would say about the book is the character development for her mermaid side of the family, i just wish i can know more about the mermaid world but overall this book was a lovable read )
I have read many YA books that have been appropriate as well for adults but this is not one of them. The premise of a normal teenager learning that her biological mother is a mermaid and going to live with the merfolk might be enchanting for a young teenager but an older teenager or an adult it seems like a juvenile fantasy. There were also aspects of the merpeople that I felt were really too much like humans to be believable. If there were such merpeople they would have quite different sort of lives I think.

So while it was somewhat boring and unbelievable for me I could see where it might be very entertaining for a young girl so that is why I am not panning it completely but I think adults should be aware that this quite likely will not be their cup of tea.
I give this book an "okay" because 75% of it was good but really the ending made me want to throw it across the room. If i had known it would end the way it did i would not have wasted my time on the beach reading it. Spoiler Alert as I neared the end I started thinking i'd be okay with a somewhat sad ending. I'd be okay with Lucy and Brian not being together... but seriously no one gets to be with the love of their life? And no sequel! I mean yea yea yea the family is together and Brian and Allie are together but for mother and daughter, first loves, and daughter and love to be forever separated.... I'm out. If i wanted crappy or real life endings I wouldn't read about mythical creatures and I'd watch the nightly news
I have to say the cover caught me right away! from the first moment of picking up the book, I could relate to the Selena. she is very much like me , in that we love to swim, our parents are very caring and loving and very big on family time, along with the fact she loves Wicked. the story is well written, though there are moments were I was a little at odds with how the story would go one from chapter to chapter. even at the end of the book, she just leaves the water, not to hear from NIX again?! like there has to be something going on there, where he shows up human or just shows up. they were meant to be. there is no real happy ending at the end of this book. she reunites with her father but her love is still under the sea and she can never see her mother again.

and much like the end of the book, the writers life ended as well. this woman fought with cancer and lost. she had been working on book two when she was told she had cancer. LIsa,( writers name) liked mermaids, doctor who( which right there made her awesome) and books. this woman is and was amazing, and I will miss her writing. and I hope someone finds the 2nt book and finishes it and publishes in her name and honor!
